Camille Vivier

Vivier is an artist and filmmaker who works in fashion. Highly influenced by the aesthetics of cinema, her work has a taut and psychological edge that contrasts with the beauty of the subject matter. The use of narrative is very important to her work as it allows viewer to see beyond representation, and her idea is to allow for different interpretations and for imagination.

“Taking a fashion photography is about creating a mise-en-scene where each detail must serve the image. When everything functions, then one can bring together a likely quirky, nearly magical situation.” (Camille Vivier, 2003)

This series of photos called ‘Untitled’ (2003) shows a young girl sitting on a fireplace and lying on the floor/bed in the house possibly at the night time. Images are dark with strong shadows. In both photos she is wearing white dress. In the second photograph dress reminds me of nightwear, which suggests that the girl was supposed to be sleeping, but for some reason she is not. It seems that the girl is looking into nowhere that her thoughts are far away from the place that she is in.

Images are strangely calm and at the same time makes me feel uncomfortable. The darkness, shadows and coldness of the photos makes it look that they can be in a vision, that they are not real. Darkness and shadows also allows to concentrate on the details, for example her expression. In the first image there is a feeling that something is going to happen and in the second one that something already happened.

These photographs reminded me of my own project about sleep paralysis. These photos have a psychological edge. It feels to me that the girl is suffering from some kind of sleep disorder and she cannot sleep at night, that is why she is sitting on the fireplace in the middle of the night.
I really like the style of the photos and I would like to use that in my own project. I believe that the strong shadows and darkness helps to express the feeling that people who suffers from sleep paralysis have.
